El comparativo compara dos cosas (The outlet is cheaper than the mall). The market is the cheapest).

  • cheap → cheaper than: The outlet is cheaper than the mall.
  • small → smaller than: This store is smaller than that one.
  • fast → faster than: The bus is faster than the train.

Adjetivos largos: se pone more#

  • expensive → more expensive than: The mall is more expensive than the outlet.
  • comfortable → more comfortable than: These shoes are more comfortable than those.
  • popular → more popular than: This store is more popular than the other one.

Si quieres decir lo contrario, usas less en lugar de more: The market is less expensive than the mall.

AdjetivoComparativoSuperlativo
good (bueno)betterthe best
bad (malo)worsethe worst
far (lejos)farther / furtherthe farthest / the furthest

The quality at the outlet is better than at the market. The traffic today is worse than yesterday.

Señalar el mejor: el superlativo#

Cuando comparas tres cosas o más, usas el superlativo: el artículo the + el adjetivo con -est, o the most + adjetivo largo.

  • cheap → the cheapest: The market is the cheapest place to buy shoes.
  • big → the biggest: That is the biggest shopping mall in the country.
  • expensive → the most expensive: The mall is the most expensive of the three.
  • good → the best: This is the best price today.

Las mismas reglas de escritura de arriba aplican: nice → the nicest, big → the biggest, busy → the busiest.

Otra diferencia: el comparativo lleva than y el superlativo lleva the y suele cerrar con of (de un grupo) o in (de un lugar): the cheapest of the three stores, the biggest mall in Costa Rica.

Ejemplo resuelto: ¿qué tienda conviene?#

Tres tiendas venden la misma camisa deportiva.

TiendaPrecioDistancia desde tu casa
The Shopping Mall₡12.0005 km
The Outlet₡8.50012 km
The Market₡6.0003 km

Oraciones comparativas:

  • The Outlet is cheaper than the Shopping Mall. (8.500 es menos que 12.000)
  • The Shopping Mall is more expensive than the Market.
  • The Market is closer than the Outlet. (3 km es menos que 12 km)

Oraciones superlativas:

  • The Market is the cheapest store.
  • The Shopping Mall is the most expensive store.
  • The Outlet is the farthest from my house.

Con esa información ya puedes decir: The market is the cheapest and the closest, but the outlet has better quality.

  • Which store is cheaper, the Outlet or the Mall?
  • Which one is the cheapest?
  • Which is better, this brand or that one?
  • Is the market more crowded than the mall?

(cualquiera).

Diálogo entre dos amigas#

Sofía: I need new sneakers. Which store is cheaper, the Outlet or the Mall?
Camila: The Outlet is cheaper than the Mall, but it’s farther from here.
Sofía: How much are the sneakers at the Outlet?
Camila: They’re nineteen thousand colones. At the Mall they’re twenty-eight thousand.
Sofía: That’s a big difference! And the quality?
Camila: The Mall has better quality, but the Outlet is the best option for the price.

Dices This store is affordable y suena mejor que This store is cheap.

Errores frecuentes#

  1. Doble comparación. more cheaper está mal.
  2. Usar that en lugar de than. The outlet is cheaper that the mall. Se escribe than.
  3. Olvidar the en el superlativo. The market is cheapest debe ser The market is the cheapest.
  4. Aplicar -er a adjetivos largos. expensiver no existe. Es more expensive.

Ponte a prueba#

Completa: «The bus is ____ (fast) than the taxi in downtown San José during rush hour».#

La oración queda «The bus is faster than the taxi…».

¿Cuál es correcto: «more cheaper» o «cheaper»? ¿Por qué?#

«Cheaper».

«The market is the cheapest of the three».

Good es irregular: better y the best. Big duplica la consonante final: bigger y the biggest.

Compara con las cifras: Mall ₡28.000 y Outlet ₡19.000. Escribe dos oraciones.#

Por ejemplo: «The Mall is more expensive than the Outlet» y «The Outlet is cheaper than the Mall».
